Energy Afterlives

Cyanotype

This cyanotype mixes a quote from Roy Scranton's "Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene" and an image of from a coal mine to show how coal mining and death are related. The quote states that "If we want to learn how to live in the Anthropocene, we must first learn how to die." While this quote speaks to the inevitability of death that comes with climate change, it also relates to how coal mining and other fossil fuel extraction methods are dangerous. Coal miners are at risk from explosions, accidents, and other health risks in the mine. In our world that is increasingly controlled by fossil fuels, we must understand the death that comes from their extraction and use.
