Project Summary
Due to increasing carbon emissions and the corresponding rise in global temperatures, glaciers are melting. Although the scale of sea level rise seems minute, the smallest increases can have dramatic effects on marine ecosystems as well as on human populations. The background of this project includes images of displaced populations, altered coastlines, and impassioned slogans about saving the planet, to highlight the impacts of sea level rise.
As for the graph, it depicts global mean sea level rise from the 1990s to 2023. To create the trend line, I averaged the mean sea level rise data provided by University of Colorado’s Sea Level Research Group. This project contains four data points – the average sea level rise in the 1990s, in the 2000s, in the 2010s, and from 2020-2023. Time is represented on the horizontal, "X" plane and mean sea level in millimeters is plotted on the vertical, "Y" plane. In order to make the project compelling, the actual difference between each average data point is depicted on the "Z" plane. The overall average change from the 1990s to 2023 is 90 mm or 9 cm.
