Energy Afterlives

"Go-Devil"

I double-exposed two photos from the coal mine to create my composition. The rigging in the top photo reminded me of a cross, so I decided to go with a theme that played off of religious iconography. The importance of religion in the cultures of coal mining communities was something that we focused on quite a bit in our "Narrative Afterlives" class. My cyanotype shows the differing perspectives of coal seeming like a good resource on the surface, with its ability to power civilizations, but its extraction being destructive/evil to the earth as represented by the "Go-Devil" sign. Although the "Go-Devil" is just a machine used to transport coal, the name has an ominous connotation.
