This is typically used to talk about the earth in generally, as global warming makes it so that we are losing the environment we know and love. In my cyanotype, it is put over shadow prints of plants and coal mines. This is showing both that mining destroys the surrounding nature, as well as implying that the CO2 emissions from coal are destroying the planet.
