Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb
Author:
Jonathan Fetter-Vorm is the author and illustrator of Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb, published on June 5, 2012. The graphic novel was named Best Graphic Novel for Teens in 2013 by the American Library Association. It has been translated into several languages, including Russian and Japanese. Fetter-Vorm now resides with his family in Montana and has written two other books: Moonbound: Apollo 11 and the Dream of Space Flight and Battle Lines: A Graphic History of the Civil War, the latter co-written with Ari Kelman.

Background:
After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor during World War II, the American government decided to launch a counterattack. This decision led to the creation of the Manhattan Project, a secretive operation that recruited scientists from their homes to work in a government-funded facility near the testing sites.
Summary:
Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb explores the creation of the atomic bomb and its profound impact on American society and the world. The novel opens with the Trinity test site and includes flashbacks to the scientific advances that led America to develop the bomb.

It then details the challenges and sacrifices involved in building such a massive weapon of destruction, including many civilians leaving their homes to work on this project to the displacement of many individuals from their homes and the doubts among scientists about whether the bomb would end the war.
Through this narrative, readers understand how the creation of the bomb served as a powerful deterrent to other nations, demonstrating America's strength. The novel portrays the devastating effects of the bomb on Japan, from the destruction in Nagasaki and Hiroshima to the long-term suffering caused by radiation. Additionally, it illustrates the beginning of the Cold War, highlighting the actions of the U.S. president and his dealings with the USSR.
Analysis:
The main themes of this graphic novel are "How much is enough?" and "Just because we have the power to do something does not mean we should." These questions are explored through illustrations of the Trinity test site and the narrative of American soldiers who dropped Little Boy, an atomic bomb, on Hiroshima. The soldiers were instructed to release the bomb at a low altitude to maximize its devastation and effectiveness. These actions highlight the lengths to which the American military was willing to go to secure victory in the war, including sacrificing the lives of innocent Japanese civilians to demonstrate America's power.
The novel also explores the profound effects of the atomic bomb on Japan. It vividly depicts the extensive destruction wrought upon Japanese cities, including Tokyo, and the broader impact of the bombings. This portrayal provides a stark view of the devastation inflicted on both urban landscapes and their inhabitants, highlighting how the consequences of war extend far beyond physical destruction to deeply affect the lives of people.

The narrative shows the utter devastation faced by the Japanese population — from their leader being compelled to surrender to the immense suffering endured by thousands as a result of the atomic bomb. Through these depictions, readers grasp the sheer magnitude of nuclear power and the dangerous, far-reaching outcomes it can produce.
The atomic bombs caused unparalleled devastation, including the emergence of a new, incurable disease known as Disease X. This disease, resulting from radiation exposure, led to DNA disruptions and cancerous mutations, causing rapid and painful deaths. However, the repercussions of these events reached beyond Japan.

The secrecy surrounding the bomb's development contributed to the Cold War, as President Truman's decision to withhold information led the USSR to view America as a threat. This created a climate of fear in American society, with citizens engaging in bomb safety practices and remaining hyper-vigilant about the possibility of nuclear conflict.

Additionally, many individuals involved in the bomb's development were unaware of its full implications. Civilians working on the project only knew their efforts were aimed at ending the war. When the bombings were revealed to the world, those involved faced profound moral guilt, grappling with the stark reality of their contributions to immense suffering. This sense of guilt is depicted in the graphic novel through panels showing their horror and sorrow, as they confront their role in the deaths of innocent people.
Conclusion:
Through Fetter-Vorm’s graphic novel, readers gain insight into the profound global impact of the atomic bombs. The narrative illustrates the dramatic evolution of nuclear power, showing how it transformed from a seemingly insurmountable scientific achievement to a widely available global resource. This progression raises the ethical question of “how much is enough?” by highlighting the far-reaching implications of nuclear advancements. The graphic novel also emphasizes the moral dilemma of possessing such immense power and the consequences of its use. Ultimately, it teaches that having the capability to do something does not necessarily justify doing it.
