Relating to the Energy & Extraction STEMLA course cluster, this scene explores the environmental damage oil extraction derricks cause. Furthermore, There Will Be Blood is based in Southern California on the Monterey Shale during the 1900s oil boom. It directly relates to STML 112 because of the historical accuracy of the film, both in the location and in the means of explosion as these Wooden Derricks were highly prone to accidents. For STML 113, it embodies how greed can overtake one’s moral compass and end in disaster - in this case a gas blowout is caused by over extraction and inadequate drilling practices.
