SOUNDSCAPES

GOAL: To visualize how energy has shaped how it feels to be alive in the world today. How has the energy revolution of the second half of the 20th century shaped our auditory landscapes?

Students in the Fall 2023 Energy Afterlives 360 chose places on Bryn Mawr's campus, then sat there for 20 minutes, recording soundscapes. They recorded the soundscapes physically, by marking categories on paper, instead of mechanically with a recorder. They then took their paper records, and digitized them, creating streamgraph visualizations of their auditory experience at the site.

We repeated this process at places in Sitka and Juneau, Alaska, in October 2023. Students in our Summer 2024 STEMLA program added new soundscapes from around Bryn Mawr...
